Guido Magenes

Associate Professor of Structural Engineering

Dr. Guido Magenes obtained his Laurea degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Pavia, Italy, his M.Sc. at the University of California San Diego, USA, and his Ph.D. at the consortium Polytechnic of Milan/University of Pavia. He is currently Associate Professor of Structural Engineering at the University of Pavia, Italy. He is also member of the teaching body of the international graduate school in Earthquake Engineering "ROSE", and head of the masonry division of the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE), Pavia. Dr. Magenes has twenty years of research experience in the area of seismic analysis, design, assessment and testing of structures with special emphasis on masonry structures. Since 2004 he has been involved, as a masonry expert, in several Italian code drafting activities, including the recent Italian structural norms and the National Application Documents for Eurocodes.

Nigel Howard

Edge Environment

Nigel, together with 2 fellow Directors, founded Edge Environment in April 2008 - a consultancy offering a broad range of environmental services into the Australasian market and in particular to develop business in Environmental Life Cycle Assessment and Ecolabelling. He has been retained by the Building Products Innovation Council as contract Project Manager for a major ($1.6M – 3 year) project funded jointly by Government and Industry to establish a level playing field methodology, national Database of LCI/A and impact assessment data. This project is expected to lead to the development of LCA based building design tools and material and product ecolabels for the construction industry. Nigel has also undertaken pioneering work for the Australian Building Codes Board to investigate Building Assessment tools as possible vehicles for regulation. Prior to starting Edge Environment Nigel worked for BRANZ in Australia. Before joining BRANZ, he worked as Chief Operating Officer for the Green Building Council of Australia.

Prior to coming to Australia he was Vice President of the US Green Building Council for nearly 5 years, responsible for the development and implementation of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) environmental rating system. Under his direction, USGBC and the LEED program grew 30-fold financially, expanding from a single pilot rating system for New Commercial Buildings to 6 including for Existing Buildings, Commercial Interiors, Core & Shell Buildings, Homes and Neighborhood Developments. He negotiated the licensing of LEED into Canada and India. He also initiated the LCA into LEED project and the Technical & Scientific Advisory Committee for investigating contentious technical issues.

Nigel originates from the UK where he was Director of the Center for Sustainable Construction at BRE. He and his team researched all aspects of sustainability for the built environment, developed and pioneered a wide range of tools and methods of design and sustainability assessment for materials, elements, buildings and communities. He was responsible for BREEAM, Ecohomes and ASCD – the UK’s environmental assessment and rating systems and pioneered the UK Life Cycle Environmental Profiles methodology and database and the Life Cycle Design tool ENVEST. These initiatives are well established in the UK, routinely used on thousands of buildings every year. The EcoHomes version of BREEAM has now been adopted as the basis for the building code “Code for Sustainable Homes” and UK government is committed to expanding this approach to all building sectors by 2016. In this role he participated in founding meetings for CEEQUAL, the rating tool for infrastructure.

He is a founder member of the International Initiative for Sustainability in the Built Environment (iiSBE) which runs the international Green Building Challenge and conferences and has been active in many international committees and projects researching and promoting sustainability in the built environment.

Nigel has also worked for DL&E Consultants in London, BRECSU promoting energy efficiency, for British Gas plc and the former Greater London Council’s Scientific Branch. He has contributed to the briefing and design teams for many high profile or award winning developments in UK, Europe and Asia.

Nigel graduated in Chemistry from Kingston University UK in 1979, and enjoys using his scientific skills in unconventional situations. Nigel has been a visiting lecturer at a number of UK Universities.
